What is an Elevator Pitch?
An elevator pitch is a quick succinct synopsis of who you are and what you do for a living. It gets its name because you are meant to be able to deliver it verbally in approximately 30 seconds – the duration of a short elevator ride.

It will make you stand out. How many times do you encounter someone, and they ask you what you do? Often followed by a rambling conversation that either lasts too long or ends too quickly. By having a clear and concise pre-prepared description of yourself you will make a lasting impression, as a person who is confident in their ideas, helping you stand out from the crowd.
Smooth delivery. Often when we are questioned on the spot, we can become flustered, especially in high-pressure situations. Due to an elevator pitch being prepared previously and practised aloud you know exactly what you are going to say and have put thought into how you will present it.
Build stronger connections. An elevator pitch often includes the place you are from and the fields you have worked in. The amount detail that an elevator pitch can include will lead to further conversation starters, especially if they relate to the person you are speaking to. This can help you avoid those awkward silences when a conversation runs out of topics.
5 Rules When Creating Your Elevator Pitch
- Be concise – The whole concept behind an elevator pitch is the fact that you are delivering a lot of information without rambling on. Set out the key defining features that you want to get across and build from there.
- Be original – Everyone has their own story, play off this and make your speech unique. Try and avoid the generic, this helps to build interest and distinguishes you from the next person.
- Be confident – Make sure what you have written down sounds both natural and clear. Practise your delivery and aim to avoid sounding arrogant.
- Provide a beneficial outcome – You should make yourself appealing to your potential customer in some way by outlining what you can do for them – whether this is saving them tax, generating them leads or providing some kind of legal compliance for them – you should always have a benefit personal to them which will sway your customer and win them over.
- Set out a goal – When writing the elevator pitch have a clear goal in mind of what you want to convey. For example, if you are looking for a new job, end the pitch with a reference to this.
Make networking easier. Prepare the pitch and update it every year or so. With practise you will convey your ideas more confidently and clearly, leading to more opportunities and deeper connections.
